To Gastón and Inés at Park Tower Buenos Aires:

In June, Néstor Muñoz approved my request that Park Tower permit me to use a Free Night Award as a gift to another person. Park Tower is not required by Marriott policy to honor this request. Martina and Victoria contacted me on June 26 to coordinate the gift reservation. The recipient of this gift was sixteen-year-old Ayelén. She traveled to Buenos Aires from Asunción to compete in an international dance contest. The rest of her dance team traveled by airplane, but Ayelén rode twenty hours on a bus. Because of Ayelén's age, she filed special paperwork to travel outside of Paraguay and she was accompanied by her mother.

Park Tower treated Ayelén and her mom as though they had Platinum Elite status. They were permitted to check in early and to check out late in the afternoon. The receptionist who received them provided, at my request and under no obligation, complimentary breakfast for two. They were served by Victor, who treated them with so much kindness and respect that they told me about him when they returned to Paraguay.

Many guests expect VIP treatment every time they set foot on a Marriott property. My member number is 205054559 and I am Platinum Elite this year. Maybe we pay for perks by carrying a balance on a credit card, or paying an annual fee, or staying many nights in Marriott properties. Maybe we get more perks than we deserve. Ayelén is not among this group, nor is her mom. Everything that you did for them was an act of good conscience, a golden door opened to welcome two people who had never previously walked across its threshold. Ayelén's family sold milanesas and pizzas to raise money for her.

Park Tower has my gratitude for welcoming Ayelén with the dignity that all of your guests receive, not by rule nor obligation, but by the choice and discretion of your staff and management. Please extend my thanks to Néstor, Martina, Victoria, Rocío, and the young lady who provided complimentary breakfast at check-in. These are five-star employees.
